WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The 2016 season of Walla Walla Sweets baseball is fast approaching, and the team is once again looking for families to host players during the summer. Host families are essential to the success of the Sweets, and play an important role in the integration of players into the community. As the Sweets prepare to welcome players from around the country to Walla Walla, the team offers local families the opportunity to get involved with the team and participate in this life-changing experience.
Players will live with local families during the summer to help off-set their living expenses. NCAA regulations prohibit the team from paying players, making host families one of the most important pieces of community involvement with the Sweets. Host families will be invited to a host family and player barbeque during the season, and will also be recognized on-field for their contribution to the Sweets organization and the players. In addition, each member of the host family immediate household will receive a General Admission season ticket, as well as 20% off all merchandise and apparel in the Sweets Shoppe during the season.
This season the Sweets will be hosting a Q&A session for returning families, as well as families who would like to learn more about hosting a player. The host family event will be held on Tuesday, March 22 at the Gymnasium across from Washington Park (501 Cayuse St) starting at 6:00 PM. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided for those in attendance.
"Our host families here in Walla Walla are the best in the league, and have become an essential part of the experience for Sweets players,” offered Sweets general manager Katie Biagi. “Over the last six years these families have created lifelong friendships with their players, and we encourage anyone who is interested in hosting a player to apply.”
Host families this season will also be offered the opportunity to host college interns learning the business of baseball. The Sweets operate an internship program every summer to provide experience to those individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in sports. In the past, the internship program has drawn from schools such as Ohio University, Washington State, University of Washington, Whitman College, and Notre Dame. The ability to offer interns a place to live during the summer, provides the Sweets with an important recruiting tool that helps Walla Walla stand out from other programs.
