Bellingham Bells to add pair of players from University of Washington

02/13/2017 12:40 PM -

Two Washington Huskies will stay in their home state for summer 2017, making the 90-minute drive from Seattle to Bellingham to join the Bellingham Bells. Infielder Jack Johnson from Seattle, Wash. and right-handed pitcher Adam Davenport from Duvall, Wash. will trade the Purple and Gold for Navy and Teal this summer.

“We are thrilled to continue what has been a long-standing relationship with the Husky Baseball program,” General Manager Stephanie Morrell said. “Having a strong connection with the closest Pac-12 baseball program has been really special for our fans, who have really enjoyed cheering for many talented Huskies over the past several seasons!”

Johnson joins the Bells after redshirting his freshman year for Washington. Prior to joining the Huskies, Johnson was a highly touted player at Roosevelt High School in Seattle. Following his senior season, Johnson was named first team All-West region and honorable mention All-American by Perfect Game USA. In his junior campaign with the Rough Riders, Johnson hit .343 en route to being named All-King County honorable mention. Perfect Game USA ranked Johnson as the eighth-best prospect in Washington State for 2015. Johnson is also familiar with the West Coast League, having appeared in 42 games for the Gresham GreyWolves last season and tying for the team lead with three home runs. Johnson also reached base at a .361 clip, scored 31 runs and drove in 16 men.

“Jack is a gifted infielder who can also really hit,” Morrell said. “Not only do we get to add a Pac-12 caliber talent, but with Jack, we add a player who has already excelled in the WCL, so we know he can compete at this level. We look forward to Jack helping us win games this summer.”

Davenport is another talented redshirt freshman from Washington, who will look to impact the Bells on the hill after a lights out high school career. In his senior season, Davenport went 10-1 with 107 strikeouts in 72 innings and 0.56 ERA on the mound while hitting .403 with 13 runners batted in and five doubles at the dish.  He helped lead Cedarcrest to a 15-2 record in conference play and a berth in the state playoffs. Following the season, Davenport was named Cascade Conference Player of the Year and first team All-State.

During summer 2016, Davenport played with the Great West League's Chico Heat.  Named to the 2016 GWL All-Star Team, Davenport finished the season with a 2.20 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 61.1 innings, helping the Heat to claim the GWL title.

“Adam is another successful homegrown pitcher, growing up near Seattle,” Morrell said. “Adam’s high school numbers jump off the page, it is not often you see a high pitcher record over 100 strikeouts and hold an era below 1.  Adam had great success in summer collegiate baseball last summer, being named an All-Star and helping his team win the league title.  Adam is a proven winner who will help us compete this summer!”

Davenport, Johnson and the Bells kick off the 2017 campaign at home with a three-game series against the Gresham GreyWolves starting on June 2nd at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham.
