Scott Gottschling is the first member of the 2010 Sweets to re-sign for the 2011 season.
- WALLA WALLA, Wa. – Scott Gottschling, a fan favorite from the Walla Walla Sweets’ inaugural West Coast League season, has re-signed for the 2011 campaign. He’ll be joined by fellow University of California at Irvine Anteater Jimmy Litchfield, a freshman left-handed pitcher from La Habra, California.
Gottchling, a 6-feet, 185 pound sophomore outfielder, made his presence felt during the Sweets’ inaugural season. He hit .257 with one HR and eight RBI. However, his biggest impact came on a single defensive play. With the Sweets leading 7-6 with two outs and the bases loaded full of Bend Elks in the top of the 9th inning, Kerry Jenkins hit a long fly ball to deep left center field. Gottschling, at a full sprint running toward the outfield fence, stretched out and made a diving catch to end the game and secure the first of three wins over the then-1st place Elks. “That was such a huge play for us,” said Sweets’ manager, J.C. Biagi. “That win gave us a big momentum boost for the series and allowed us to stay in the playoff race until the very end.” The Sweets had won three of their previous four and would go on to win four of their next five games as well.
Litchfield, a freshman left-handed pitcher, went 8-3 with a 1.76 ERA last spring during his senior season at Sonora (Calif.) High School. Opponents hit only .227 off him as he threw eight complete games at struck out 64 batters. “Jimmy’s a solid southpaw who was picked up by a strong program,” said Sweets’ General Manager, Zachary Fraser. “We have a good relationship with Coach Gillespie and we’re thrilled that he is sending a talent like Jimmy our way.” Litchfield was a major contributor to Sonora’s offense as well. He hit .337 while slugging six home runs and driving in 18 RBI. In addition, he scored 32 runs.
UC-Irvine starts their season with a three-game series at home against Nevada on February 18. March 25-27 the Anteaters will visit Spokane, WA to play a three game series against Gonzaga where Gottschling and Litchfield will square off against their 2011 Sweets teammates, Sean Santschi and Derek Peterson. UC-Irvine will also play several games against opponents featuring 2010 Sweets including UCLA (Adrian Williams, Kevin Williams and Dennis Holt), Cal Poly (Joey Wagman, Elliot Stewart and Denver Chavez), Nevada (Jacob Overbay) and USC (Matt Hart).
