46 collegiate prospects that have played for WCCBL clubs were selected in the 2010 MLB June draft held Monday, June 7 through Wednesday, June 9. The first West Coast League pick for a second consecutive year was 2007 league strikeout leader James Paxton of Kentucky.
Paxton was the 37th overall pick of the 2009 MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The southpaw from Ladner, British Columbia was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 4th round in this year’s draft.
James went 3-5 with a 2.95 ERA over 11 starts while striking out 62 for the Kelowna Falcons in 2007.
Paxton did not pitch this past spring, but went 5-3 and struckout 115 over 78 1/3 innings for Kentucky in 2009.
The next highest WCL alum pick was another ex-Falcon, right-hander Dixon Anderson of the Cal Bears. Anderson was selected in the 6th round by the Baltimore Orioles.
The Corvallis Knights were the WCL club most represented in the draft as 11 Knights were chosen including Oregon State right-hander Greg Peavey (pictured). The Kelowna Falcons were the next most represented WCL team with 8 draftees while 7 Elks, 5 Bells, 4 AppleSox, 3 RiverHawks, 3 Pirates, 2 Sweets, 2 BlueJackets and a Black Bear were drafted.
