Ex-Moses Lake ace A.J. Morris of Kansas State is named All-American

Several ex-WCLers were named to 2009 All-Conference teams including A.J. Morris (pictured) of Kansas State. The junior right-hander also earned All-Big 12 and All-America honors and was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year. Morris, who was picked by the Washington Nationals in the 4th round of this June’s MLB draft, finished the season as Kansas State’s single-season record-holder for wins (14), strikeouts (100), innings pitched (116.1) and games started (16). His 14 wins tied for the third-most in Big 12 history, while his 2.09 ERA was the seventh-lowest in school history.

With Moses Lake last summer, A.J. was the starting pitcher for the East All-Star team, was named first-team All-WCL and led the league in strikeouts with 57.

Three former West Coast Leaguers were named their conference’s Pitcher of the Year including Morris.

Ex-Corvallis Knights southpaw Daniel Bibona of UC Irvine was named Big West Pitcher of the Year and earned All-America honors. The junior southpaw led the Big West in strikeouts with 108 and went 12-1 with a 2.63 ERA for the Big West champion Anteaters. Bibona was selected in the 16th round of the 2009 MLB June draft by St. Louis.

Former Wenatchee AppleSox hurler Matt Fields of Gonzaga was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year. Fields led the Bulldogs to a Regional going 8-1 while posting a 3.47 ERA. The senior right-hander was drafted in the 22nd round this past Wednesday by the Toronto Blue Jays.
