Ex-Wenatchee southpaw Marco Gonzales of Gonzaga selected in the first round (19th overall pick)

The West Coast League represented well this year in the MLB draft as 57 former and current WCL players were selected by MLB teams.

The top WCL draft pick was Wenatchee AppleSox alum Marco Gonzales of Gonzaga (pictured). The St. Louis Cardinals selected Gonzales in the first round as the 19th overall pick. This is the highest pick ever for an AppleSox player.

Thirteen players with ties to the Corvallis Knights were selected in this year’s draft. Corvallis had the highest number of former and current players drafted among the WCL teams. “Once again the draft validates the high quality of coaching our players get at our partner schools,” Knights’ president Dan Segel said. “And it illustrates our commitment to bringing high caliber players to the WCL.”

The Walla Walla Sweets, with the second highest number, had nine former and current players drafted this year.
