Knights win third WCL title; Corvallis blanks AppleSox 1-0 in game two thriller

The Corvallis Knights won their third West Coast League Championship on Monday night before a crowd of 1,224 at Goss Stadium. The Knights swept the Wenatchee AppleSox two games to none by beating them 1-0 in game two.

It was the fourth time the two teams had met in the West Coast League Championship Series (WCLCS).

With the win, Corvallis evened their WCLCS mark between the clubs at 2-2 and all-time record vs. Wenatchee at 36-36.

Knights’ starter Jorge Perez of Grand Canyon tossed a two-hit shutout to out-duel AppleSox southpaw Trevor Lubking of Pacific Lutheran who only allowed two hits and one run in an instant classic.

Perez was masterful, walking none and striking out 6 in a game that lasted only 1 hour and 28 minutes. The Knights (46-17, 37-17) finished the season on a 14-game win streak and 21-game home win streak.

Corvallis scored its lone run in the fourth-inning as center fielder Blake Drake of Concordia led-off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Peter Van Gansen of Cal Poly and scored on Dane Lund’s sacrifice fly.

The Knights only allowed one run in the series, an eighth-inning solo homer by Joey Jansen of Oregon State in game one at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Corvallis southpaw Andrew Naderer of Grand Canyon was masterful tossing 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball to earn the win and reliever Alex Nesbitt of Washington and Devon Barker of Central Washington closed out the series opener in dramatic fashion by striking out the last two AppleSox batters with the bases loaded to save the Knights’ 3-1 victory.
