The West Coast League Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, as announced by league president Brian Sloan, are Central Arizona College sophomore infielder Matt Kroon of the Bend Elks and Mt. Hood CC freshman pitcher Sam Menegat of the Kelowna Falcons for the week of July 10-16.
Kroon, who transferred from University of Oregon to Central Arizona last year, went 12-for-25 with 11 runs scored, 5 stolen bases, two doubles, 3 homers and 13 RBIs to lead the Elks to a 5-1 week.
For the summer, Matt is hitting .333, with 9 stolen bases, 4 HR and 20 RBI. He was selected in the 38th round of the 2015 MLB draft by Cincinnati and he was picked again in this year’s MLB June draft by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 30th round.
Menegat, a sophomore-to-be southpaw from Eugene, Oregon, twirled two masterpieces this past week, tossing 8 innings at Corvallis to earn the 4-1 win on July 10 and 7 shutout innings vs. Wenatchee in a no-decision on July 16. In total, Menegat pitched 15 innings, allowed one run and struck out 18. He walked none and struck out 8 vs. the AppleSox and walked three and struck out 10 vs. the Knights at Goss Stadium.
Sam is 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA and one save over 9 appearances and 3 starts for the Falcons this season.
