Shane McGuire, HCats

The West Coast League Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, as announced by league president Brian Sloan, are San Diego incoming frosh catcher Shane McGuire of the Victoria HarbourCats and Gonzaga incoming freshman pitcher McKabe Cottrell of Wenatchee for the week of July 24-30.

McGuire, who will be a freshman at University of San Diego this fall, went 15-for-26 for the week with 2 homers and 12 RBIs. Shane has sizzled this summer for the North Division second-half leading HarbourCats (13-9) as McGuire is hitting .517 for the summer with 23 RBIs over 21 games and 60 at bats.

Wenatchee’s McKabe Cottrell, who will be a frosh at Gonzaga this fall, tossed a complete game shutout at Port Angeles on July 27th. The southpaw allowed only two hits while walking none and striking out 10 to earn the win. For the summer, Cottrell is 1-2 with a 3.24 ERA and he’s struck out 44 over 44.1 innings pitched.

The AppleSox (12-9) are a half-game back of Victoria as the race in the North is heated with the HarbourCats, Wenatchee and Bellingham (11-10) all contending for a playoff berth. The winner of the second half will play the Kelowna Falcons (first-half winners) in the North Divisional Series beginning on Tuesday, August 8th.
