The West Coast League first-round best-of-three series both ended last night in dramatic fashion with walk-off hits in the bottom of tne ninth at Goss Stadium and Joe Martin Field, respectively.
Both hard-fought series were played before enthusiastic crowds and featured late-inning thrills.
First, WCL all-star Kevin Kline of Dixie State sent the Corvallis Knights to the final round of WCL playoffs with a monster one-out, two-run homer over the left field wall at Goss Stadium to give the Knights the 2-1 victory and series sweep.
Then shortly thereafter, WCL all-star Danny Miller of Chico State delivered a two-out RBI single to center field to propel the Bells to the WCL Championship Series with a walk-off giving Bellingham the 4-3 win over expansion Yakima Valley and the series sweep.
Pitching shined in the first-round of the post-season as Corvallis edged Bend 2-1 in consecutive games and the Bells held the hard-hitting Pippins to a total of four runs over two games.
WCL defending champion Corvallis advances to the WCLCS for the fourth consecutive season and seventh time in team history. This will be Bellingham’s first appearance in the WCLCS since 2005. The Bells finished the season with the WCL’s best regular-season record at 37-17.
