In 2025, the West Coast League (WCL) celebrated its 20th Anniversary Season in grand style, as North America’s premier summer collegiate baseball league featured record-breaking performances and attendance.
Including official League, nonleague, and postseason games, 794,213 fans enjoyed ballparks across the Pacific Northwest and Alberta to set a League attendance mark.
The Edmonton Riverhawks set a WCL single-game record with a sellout crowd of 9,200 for their Canada Day game. The Riverhawks also established regular-season records for average (4,888) and total attendance (131,966).
In July, the Bellingham Bells hosted the WCL All-Star Game for the second straight season. The game was televised on MLB’s digital channels and saw Tommy Markey (Port Angeles Lefties/Fordham) deliver a two-run single to cap a four-run bottom of the third in the North’s 5-3 victory. Markey was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
The Portland Pickles posted a regular-season record with 43 wins, led by League MVP Josh Schleichardt. The Oregon commit hit 18 home runs and drove in 64, both marks eclipsing previous WCL standards.
The Marion Berries were among the postseason qualifiers, becoming the fourth expansion team in League history to accomplish that feat in its first year. The Pickles advanced to the title game but fell short in their bid to repeat as WCL champions, losing 2-1 to the Bells in a game that hinged on the game’s final pitch.
The 2025 MLB Draft saw 44 WCL players selected, including eight who played in the League this year. Another half-dozen WCL alumni (so far) have made their MLB debuts this season.
“Since I joined the league in 2018,” said WCL Commissioner Rob Neyer, “I’ve been astounded by every teams’ commitment to upping their games each season. So, I’m confident with my prediction that as terrific as 2025 has been, 2026 will be even better.”
As the WCL looks toward its next 20 seasons, the circuit continues to bring top-tier summer entertainment to communities across the Pacific Northwest and Alberta.
