30 collegians with WCCBL experience selected in 2007 MLB draft

30 collegiate prospects that played for WCCBL clubs were selected in the 2007 MLB June draft held Thursday, June 7 and Friday, June 8. The first collegian with experience playing with a WCCBL club selected in this year’s draft was WCC Pitcher of the Year Clayton Mortensen. Mortensen was picked in the 1st round (supplemental round) by the St. Louis Cardinals. Mortensen, the 36th pick of this year’s draft, starred for Wenatchee in 2005 and 2006. He went 4-2 with a 1.62 ERA last summer. The next WCCBLer selected was also chosen in the first round, Eddie Kunz of Oregon State University. Kunz, the draft’s 42nd pick, pitched for the Bellingham Bells in 2005. Other top 5 round selections were Bend’s Duke Welker of Arkansas, Grant Desme of Cal Poly SLO, Eric Sogard of Arizona State and Evan Reed of Cal Poly SLO; Kelowna’s Jess Todd of Arkansas; Corvallis’ Marc Rzepczynski of UC Riverside; and Spokane’s Jeremy Hefner of Oral Roberts. Welker, Desme and Sogard were selected in the 2nd round by Pittsburgh, Oakland and San Diego, respectively, Todd was picked by St. Louis in the 2nd round, Reed by Texas in the 3rd, Rzepczynski by Toronto in the 5th and Hefner by San Diego in the 5th.

The Corvallis Knights were the WCCBL club most represented in the draft as 8 Knights’ alums were chosen. The Bend Elks were the next most represented WCCBL team with 7.
