Two Incoming Freshmen Named to the South Division All-Star Team
by Bob Webster

Two young men who just two months ago were playing high school baseball have been named West Coast League All-Stars. Cadyn Grenier of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas plays shortstop for the Bend Elks and Mickey Walker of McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon pitches for the Klamath Falls Gems.

Cadyn Grenier hit .472 with four home runs and 65 runs scored for Bishop Gorman. He will be playing baseball at Oregon State University in 2016.

Grenier received a call from the St. Louis Cardinals asking if he would sign if they drafted him #23 overall in this year’s MLB June draft. When the Cardinals couldn’t match his asking price, the OSU commit decided that playing for the Beavers for at least three years was his best option. He was eventually drafted in the 21st round by the Cardinals and reported to Bend to start his college career.

In 28 games for the Bend Elks this season, Grenier is hitting .383 with 3 home runs, 10 stolen bases and 22 RBIs.

Mickey Walker will be attending St. Martin’s University this fall on an athletic and academic scholarship. The McNary High School graduate was named Salem Area Athlete of the Year, unanimous selection first-team All-League, Team MVP and Most Outstanding Pitcher.

Walker has made 7 starts and logged 39 innings for the Gems and is 1-5 with a 4.11 ERA.
